How to use the latest Facebook updates in your small business marketing

Online platforms are constantly changing, meaning you need to stay up to date if you want to get the biggest bang for your marketing buck.

Facebook is no different, with three recent updates that open up a range of possibilities for reaching more potential customers through the platform. Here’s a rundown of Facebook’s new features, and how you can start using them in your own business.

1. Explore new content with Facebook’s Explore Feed

The Explore Feed is designed to help users discover new content across the social network, beyond posts from their friends and the Pages they already follow.

How does it work? You can find the Explore feed under the rocket ship icon in the Facebook app’s ‘More’ menu, and it will then show you popular posts, articles, images and videos based on your interest.

Why should it matter to you? As a business owner, this is exciting because it gives new customers a new way to discover you online. However, you’ll only show up in the feed if you are regularly sharing content on Facebook, so it’s time to get posting!

2. Create more effective ads on Facebook Marketplace

Facebook’s Marketplace feature, launched in October 2016, allows users to list and browse items for sale. In May 2017, more than 18 million new items were posted for sale to Marketplace in the US, which demonstrates just how much potential this feature has to grow.

When it comes to advertising, Facebook is currently testing ads on some users within the Marketplace, with the potential to roll out to all users if the ads perform well. Given that people in the Marketplace are already thinking about making a buying decision, this could be a great way to reach new customers who are ready to buy.

3. Make GIFs without leaving Facebook

GIFs have been called the biggest digital marketing trend for 2017. They get more engagement (meaning, Likes and shares) on social media than photos, and Google Trends has shown that online interest in GIFs is on the rise.

The good news is that now you can create your own GIFs in Facebook’s mobile app. Simple swipe left on the home screen to get to the camera, select ‘GIF’ at the top of the screen, and GIF away!
