Our resident SEO expert, Chris Van Langenberg, tells us why if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.
1. Google says not to trust a #1 promise
Google themselves say, “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Yes, those are their words.
2. Rankings don’t equal success
You could rank highly for searches like ‘left handed plumbers with brown hair and freckles in Richmond’ pretty easily. But this won’t bring traffic to your site.
3. No one controls rankings (except Google themselves)
You can only guarantee something you have control over. But SEO agencies don’t have control over Google. There are over 200 factors that affect results.
4. Everyone searches differently
Do a search. Then have a friend or family member do the same search. You’ll get different results. Factors like whether you’re logged in to Google, your search history and even which device you’re on all contribute.
5. They haven’t even seen your site yet
You’ve probably seen a ‘Page 1 Guarantee’ on agency websites, or in the title of a spam email. Either way, it’s a pretty safe bet they’ve never seen your website. Without seeing your site no agency can give you any indication of performance.
So, what should you look for? A company who focuses on the whole process (not just ranking), who’s transparent on how they get results, and of course who has success stories to show.
