Order of Australia recipient Kate Ceberano is launching a unique campaign, called Real Connections, to encourage Australians to think about their connections with people they care about.

The campaign is inspired by the results of a comprehensive national study, commissioned by White Pages, which asks Australians how they feel about their relationships in relation to influences such as technology, proximity and their online vs offline personalities.

Given the role technology plays in our lives, one of the first results released is somewhat surprising: 83% of us value face-to-face communication over any other form. Over three quarters of us (77%) say they feel “better understood” when they talk to someone in real life.

White Pages Executive General Manager Stephen Palmer says the objective of the Real Connections campaign is to get people talking again.

“We’re so used to ‘liking’ something on social media or sharing our news through a digital platform that the art of simply connecting with someone in person or over the phone is becoming lost,” he said.

“The research also reveals Australians consider the most important, meaningful ways we connect with each other are sight, sound and touch.”

The Real Connections campaign includes a national competition to help bring people from across Australia together for a weekend in Melbourne in October. Kate Ceberano will help judge the entries and welcome the winners to her home town.

“As a songwriter, I’m always thinking about relationships and the effect they have on me, whether this is through a friendship, an old flame, my child or even a stranger in the street.  Great music comes from the storytelling of how a human connection has impacted us,” Ceberano said.

“Have a think about someone you haven’t spoken to for some time. The Real Connections competition is offering you the chance to spend a weekend with that person, to connect again face to face.”

Stephen Palmer says, “We’re just encouraging people to do what the White Pages has done for 136 years - and that is to simply connect with each other to honour those real connections in your life.”
